Episode #57 - Empowered Self Care
Hey, hey ladies. How are you? Welcome to October. What? Where did summer go? If you're on the west coast, I'm in Vancouver. It is still summer here, it's gorgeous. This past weekend, I was out on a boat. It was a very big boat with a number of amazing people. And it was like 25 degrees outside and not a cloud in the sky, it was perfect weather. We ended up pulling into a beach and tendering in. I feel so high class saying that I've never been on a tender before. It was very much a first time experience for me and I was loving it. And there's a beautiful beach almost to ourselves. Like there was A few dozen people on it, but in the middle of summer it would have been packed. And because it was, you know, October 2nd, it was not, it was like having a private beach, so fun. All right, you guys. So just a quick reminder in celebration of Lady Sculpt lifestyles one-year anniversary, we are running monthly contests to get your very own LadySculp Lifestyle, exclusive tank top. All you have to do is email [email protected] with your favorite Lady Sculpt Lifestyle episode and why. This month's contest, the cutoff date is this Saturday, October 8th. Okay. So, episode number 57 is empowered self care. When I originally did the empowerment series, I planned these podcasts, months and months in advance. And when I originally planned the empowerment series, I didn't plan to do an episode on empowered self care. But over the last few days, I've found myself talking about self care so much and on my drive down from Whistler today. I was like, I need to do an episode of empowered self care and what that is and what it looks like and how we can show up for ourselves in a way that just feels so freaking good. Are you guys ready? Are you ready to dive in? We're going to keep today's episode really nice and short. I'm in the middle of packing and in the middle of moving. And I'm up to my eyeballs in boxes because the movers are coming tomorrow. So I still have to pack the kitchen. If you guys have moved before, you know what I mean? I have to wrap up all the wine glasses and all the plates and all the glass and I saved it till last, because I don't want to do it.
Okay. So. Let's talk a little bit about self care. I think most of us feel like we could probably do better in this department. Yeah. Are you guys with me? What is self care? Self care is such a big umbrella that ranges from health and wellness to personal hygiene to even basic health care necessities to going out and having manicures and spa treatments, to just giving yourself time to be, right? Having a cup of coffee in the morning in bed is self care, having a bubble bath is self-care, going for a leisurely walk in the woods with my dog, self care.
Now, what's the difference between regular self care and empowered self care? I really sat back and thought about this and I was like, what makes self care empowered. And to me, the difference is self care that is semi-forced when you burn out at work. So you pull back and you spend some time getting back to kind of a normal baseline or when you get sick, you're forced to stay in bed and take care of yourself. This is not empowered self care. To me, empowered self care is very purposeful and it's planned ahead of time.
Are you guys getting used to me saying that yet? So, I was talking to one of my clients today about empowered self care. And I was telling her that I am so thankful to my past self from one month ago, who booked professional movers to come and help me move tomorrow. I have moved dozens of times in my life. You guys, dozens, like not even joking. I move a lot. I like moving. I find it almost therapeutic, very cleansing, Ipurge and I get to start fresh. It feels really nice, but I've always moved myself. And this move felt particularly exhausting for a number of reasons. First off, I'm super busy. Second, I'm moving a fairly long distance and there are a lot of stairs where I'm going. So a month ago, I was planning to rent a truck, grab some friends and do the move myself. I recognized that immediately, the idea exhausted me and immediately I almost felt like a burden for asking friends. And I was like, how can I take care of myself in this situation, how can I really make sure that this is an enjoyable experience for me and that I'm not exhausted at the end of it, because we're going right into three weeks out of the biggest competition of our season. So I called around and I found movers that I really liked and I hired them and I put a deposit down and immediately I felt better. And now today it being the day before the move, I am so grateful that tomorrow all I have to do is coordinate and point and delegate. I feel like I took care of me. And to me, that's self care. I have also booked myself a day at the spa for this weekend. So after the move, after the unpacking, after all the running up and down the stairs, after the little bits of stress. I can go and unwind. And to me, I have taken care of myself in this circumstance. So, I want you guys to really think about how you can empower yourself to care.
So what this looks like, we're going into October. So, it's October 5th today. Well, if you're listening to this on the day, it was released it's October 5th, but no matter what month you're in, I want you to sit down and I want you to like look at the next four weeks even just look at this coming week ahead and I want you to think to yourself, what can I do for my future self to care for her. What can I plan or book or free up in my schedule, so that she feels taken care of when we get there. And this might even mean saying no to something, maybe you have a free Saturday. And someone has asked you to help volunteer or help take kids somewhere. And you just decide to say no and have a day with nothing on the calendar. Having a free day, you guys with nothing on the calendar is totally self, totally self care. Maybe you plan a hike for yourself, maybe you just plan an evening to have a bubble bath and you stop off at a bath store and get yourself a nice, expensive bath bomb to put in that bath, right? Maybe you book a Manny Petty for the end of the month. I'm a big fan and anyone who works with me, trains with me, my clients, everyone knows this. I was actually, recently talking to a good friend of mine, And we were talking about me moving back up to Whistler and having access to the Scandinave Spa. And I was like, I'm going to use it as a reward. So every month that I achieved my fitness goals every month that I show up and I do my gyming and I achieve the action goal that I set up for myself, I will treat myself to a one month membership the following month at the Scandinave Spa and my friend Carmel laughed because she's so used to me using self care as a reward. And I do this but I use special self care as rewards. I show up and care for myself on a daily basis on purpose in an empowered way by making sure that I book time between my calls, making sure that I have time to spend with my dog, making sure that my schedule isn't overflowing and that I'm not feeling too busy. Sometimes, sometimes I'm not so good at it. I'm getting better. And then the fancy stuff that the more expensive self care, the stuff that maybe you wouldn't do just on the regular stuff, like Scandinave Spa, maybe a massage, maybe that's a pedicure manicure for you, maybe going to get your hair done, maybe a weekend away. Right? Anything like that, maybe a vacation, I like to take those bigger self care rewards and attach them to a goal that I really want to achieve. And it just helps me, you know, it gives me that little bit of extra motivation to achieve heckle. But you have to achieve the goal to get the reward, right?
Yeah. So just to reiterate the difference between self care and empowered self care. The self care that I described at the beginning of this episode is more of reactive self care where the world, your circumstance, your body, you've taken it to a point where it's demanding self care and you're having to respond in a way that is self care. In the moment, self care is like when you get home from work and you're exhausted and you flop down on the couch and pour yourself a glass of wine, and call it self care. Right? It doesn't have that same purposeful empowered feeling around it. Often maybe we feel a little guilty about it. Maybe there's a little bit of shame there. Maybe we had planned to not drink wine during the week, right? Maybe we call it self care, but it really is just more of like a numbing tactic from the stress of the day. So where we want to get to with this, is purposefully planned ahead for your future self, self care.
So literally you guys, when you get home from listening to this podcast, if you're at home right now, grab a pen and paper. If you're not at home, if you're out walking or gyming or doing whatever. When you get home, I want you to sit down in your calendar and I want you to plan at least three things in the coming week that you're going to do for yourself as self care. And then post them up on Instagram. Tag me in them at Lylas Leona or at Lady Sculpt. And I want to know, give me some ideas, what do you do for self care? Let's all do this and see if we can create a list of a hundred different ways to take care of our future selves. And then one last thing before I go, when you get to that moment that you had planned for yourself weeks ago and you're enjoying that bubble bath or you're enjoying that massage or you're enjoying having nothing planned, I want you to take a moment and be grateful to your past self, for planning that for you. Take a moment and acknowledge that you feel taken care of by you. I think that this is a really important part of building a deep, trusting, loving relationship with ourselves, self gratitude you guys.
All right my friends. That is what I have for you today in episode number 57 empowered self care tune in, next week, where we announced the first winner of the LSL one year anniversary contest and we finish off with a few more episodes of the empowerment series. All right, you guys. I'll see you next week. Bye for now.
